Individual Practice Design
It is acknowledged that there is a need for group classes in our society due to the advantages of cost, convenience and practicality. However, there is still a need for some students to have the benefit of an individually designed personal practice. Not everyone feels confident or indeed “competent” enough to join a class situation. A person may have a particular condition or be in a situation which is not conducive for them to join a group class where they are absorbed into the general whole and their particular issue might not be addressed.
As such, I offer private lessons to design a personalised practise for the individual student (3 private lessons overall). The integrated approach means that along with the physical postures, breathing techniques, relaxation techniques and quietening practices for the mind are incorporated into one’s practice. This is then reviewed and modified over time according to the student’s needs.
People come to Yoga with their own unique predisposition and set of circumstances – physically, mentally, emotionally etc. Individual conditions can be taken into consideration when formulating a specific set of practices for a student. The aggravation of existing weaknesses can be avoided and certain conditions can actually be improved. For example, a person with severe lower back problems would not benefit from practising intense backbends and someone with neck problems might aggravate the situation by doing the shoulder stand or headstand. With individual attention practices can be modified or avoided until such time as the student has built up strength and flexibility in a particular area be it in the spine, joints, muscles, lungs, core etc.
Traditionally, Yoga was taught in this way, one on one, because even back then they recognised the reality that there is no “one size fits all”.
